CXXXV: Cinclosomatidae
Another step into the songbirds brings us to Cinclosomatidae: the quail-thrushes. There are 11 species native to the Austro-Papuan region. Pictured are the blue jewel-babbler (Ptilorrhoa caerulescens) and melga (Cinclosoma cinnamomeum).
Cinclosomatids are an enigmatic family of uncertain placement. They used to be grouped with the logrunners, but are now grouped with the Corvides. These are stocky birds with sturdy legs and strong beaks. Many species are cryptically colored on the dorsal side to blend in, and more boldly colored on the ventral side for display.
Cinclosomatids are forest birds that typically specialize in certain altitudes. They are generally terrestrial, foraging for invertebrates on the forest floor. Cup nests are built in low vegetation or on the ground.
